North and West Qatar: Al Zubarah, Zekreet or Both?
Updated October 28, 2026 · 5 min read
Choose Al Zubarah for archaeology and Gulf history; choose Zekreet for limestone formations and monumental desert art. Combining both is possible on a long guided day, but they are in different directions and should not be treated as neighbouring stops.
Al Zubarah: the stronger history visit
Al Zubarah Archaeological Site lies about 100 km northwest of Doha. Qatar Museums calls it the country’s largest heritage site and the best-preserved example of an eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Gulf trading and pearl-fishing town. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.
The fort, visitor facilities and boardwalk make this the more structured outing. The official hours are Saturday to Thursday, 9am to 5pm, and Friday, 12.30pm to 5pm; entry is ticketed. Hours can change, so check Qatar Museums before departure. The outdoor site has limited shade.
Zekreet: landscape rather than a conventional attraction
Zekreet is roughly 90 km west of central Doha. Its mushroom-shaped limestone formations and Richard Serra’s East-West/West-East installation sit in a broad, exposed landscape. Visit Qatar says there is no public transport and recommends a 4x4. Facilities away from formal sites are sparse, so take water and do not depend on finding food or toilets.
Do not confuse the wider Zekreet area with Zekreet Fort. Qatar Museums currently marks the fort and mosque as temporarily closed until further notice. A tour may still visit the rock formations and public art, but it should not promise entry to the closed fort.
Can you visit both in one day?
Yes, with an early start, a planned route and modest expectations at each stop. The North and West Qatar day trip with pickup starts at €87.62 and links Al Zubarah with western rock formations. Confirm the current itinerary because access and closures can alter stops.
Independently, both in one day means several hours of driving and possible off-road sections. If you want to drive, compare car hire for Doha, choose a vehicle suitable for the intended route and verify with the rental company where it may be taken. Do not assume an ordinary rental agreement covers off-road driving.
Which one should you choose?
Choose Al Zubarah if UNESCO history, archaeology and a defined visitor route matter most. Choose Zekreet for photography, geology and Serra’s artwork, especially near softer late-day light. Travellers with one free half-day should pick one. Those with a full day and little appetite for route-finding are better served by the guided north-and-west trip.
